I didn’t want to, but it seemed I had no choice but to leave Aidan in Nikolina’s questionable care after breakfast. He kissed me on the forehead and gave me a look that told me I shouldn’t worry so much about him.

Honestly, I never expected to be in a position where I was actually worrying about a guy like Aidan. Back when we were at Under Realm Academy, he was one of the most talented necromancers and had a reputation that made a lot of people respect—if not, fear—him. It didn’t make much sense for anyone to worry about his wellbeing; everything about him screamed that he was more than capable of taking care of himself.

However, now that we were so far away from the comfort of home and school, thrust into the real world where we didn’t know what to expect around every corner, I began to see Aidan in a different light.

Not only was I capable of setting pretty much anything on fire, but I could also transform into a deadly dragon. On the other hand, Aidan’s talents pretty much lied exclusively in talking to and controlling the dead, though some light witch-like magic was usually possible if a necromancer could channel enough dead energy.

In short, he was no match for our current hosts. That was an unspoken fact between us in that moment as we said our brief goodbye.

Nikolina smirked at our private exchange of silent words.

“Honestly, Moira,” she sighed, checking her nails casually. “I’m not going to eat him. He’ll be fine. Go fly.”

And with that, she hooked her arm through Aidan’s elbow and tugged him away in the opposite direction of our room.

I turned to Damien and raised my eyebrows expectantly.

“Um, this way,” he said, gesturing for me to follow him outside to the back gardens that we had entered through the evening before. “By the way, Nikolina really is harmless. She likes to act tough, but the truth is that she actually wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

I couldn’t help it, I chuckled. That sounded a lot like someone else I knew.

Maybe Aidan and Nikolina would get along a lot better than I assumed.

“So, uh, how does this work?” I asked, picking up my pace to stay beside Damien as he led us deep into the forested gardens.

The mechanics of flying were obvious, even to a baby dragon like me, but the logistics were where I was a little hazy. After all, turning into a dragon meant getting naked… unless you wanted to ruin your clothes.

It probably went without saying, but someone like me—who took great pride in their wardrobe—was unwilling to allow all of my precious clothes to get destroyed.

Being a dragon was destructive enough in and of itself.

“We have some weatherproof changing screens behind the gardens this way,” Damien replied, a smile in his tone. He obviously knew that I was referring entirely to the whole nakedness thing. “It’s quite common for shifter species like us and allows us to avoid changing inside our homes as well as walking around outdoors in the nude.
